Raworth’s Record Round Sparks Villa Park Golfers

Villa Park’s Shelly Raworth shot a school-record one-under 34 on the Green River Orange Course to help the Spartans, ranked third in Orange County, defeat Orange, 129-178, in a Century League girls’ golf match Wednesday.

Raworth, a junior, made five birdies, one par and three bogies for Villa Park (11-4, 7-0 in league). She broke her own record of 37.

Teammate Priscilla Park, a sophomore, finished second with a 44.

In the South Coast League:

No. 10 El Toro 137, Capistrano Valley 157--Medalist Melissa Peters made five pars and shot four-over 39 at Marbella for El Toro (10-2, 8-0).

In the Sunset League:

No. 9 Los Alamitos 110, Fountain Valley 126--Medalist Jamie Oliver of Los Alamitos made three birdies and shot one-under 30 at David L. Baker for Los Alamitos (5-3 in league).

In nonleague girls’ golf:

Ocean View 129, Edison 157--Nicole Peralta shot a one-over 37 for Ocean View (10-5) and hit her tee shot on the 162-yard par-three seventh at Meadowlark to within four inches to make birdie.

The team score of 129 is the best score in Ocean View’s three-year girls’ golf history.

Santa Margarita 276, Palm Desert 301--Megan Mulhaupt shot par over the last three holes at Desert Willow to finish with a 15-over 87 for Santa Margarita (9-5) in the conclusion of an 18-hole match that began on Coto de Caza North.

Palm Desert suffered only its second loss of the season, the other to Newport Harbor.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Los Amigos 10, Santa Ana 8--Veronica Sommer lost only one game and swept her singles sets for Los Amigos (12-4). Sommer improved to 43-2 in singles.

In Academy League girls’ volleyball:

St. Margaret’s 3, Southern California Christian 0--Allison Bendush had eight kills for the Tartans (10-1, 7-0), who won, 15-4, 15-6, 15-0. St. Margaret’s is top-ranked in Southern Section Division V-AA.

In Century League boys’ water polo:

No. 2 Foothill 15, Santa Ana Valley 7--After a slow first quarter, which ended with the score tied, 2-2, the Knights came back with three goals in the second quarter and 10 more in the second half. Pat Logan, who leads Foothill (12-4, 2-0) in scoring, finished with seven goals.

Santa Ana Valley, ranked ninth in Division I, is 16-4, 2-1.

No. 6 Villa Park 20, Orange 2--T.J. Matijevich scored seven goals for visiting Villa Park (13-5, 2-0).

Canyon 11, El Modena 4--Chris Meyer and Dustin Lazano each scored three goals for Canyon (7-7, 1-2). Ryan Ley had three goals for El Modena (0-2).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 20, Sunny Hills 6--Adam Acevedo scored four goals and Kenny Comer added two for host Buena Park (14-9, 3-0). Ethan Jessup had 10 saves for the Coyotes.

La Habra 13, Fullerton 3--Gabe Pacheco scored four goals and Josh Jewett added three for visiting La Habra (10-9, 3-0).

Sonora 9, Troy 8--Jeff Padgett scored his third goal, the game-winner, with 14 seconds remaining for host Sonora (12-4, 1-2). Ian Markstrum scored four goals for Troy.

In the Sea View League:

Aliso Niguel 16, No. 10 Laguna Hills 8--Chris Rodrigues and Brian Martin each scored five goals and Rory Laster had four goals for Aliso Niguel (8-11, 1-1). Laguna Hills is 11-4, 0-2.

In the Serra League:

No. 5 Servite 11, Mater Dei 3--Michael Moungian had four goals and Vince Bevins and Brian Lingle had three goals each for Servite (14-4, 4-0). Bevins also had eight steals and two assists.

In the Sunset League:

No. 8 Los Alamitos 13, Edison 2--Trevor Wawrzynski scored three first-quarter goals as Los Alamitos took a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes. Wawrzynski also had five assists as Los Alamitos (15-6, 3-0) handed Edison its first loss in three league games.

Erik Geoffroy scored four goals for the Griffins.

Marina 8, Fountain Valley 5--Mike Alvino scored three goals for Marina (6-9, 1-3).
