Orange County Health Care Agency officials believe that it may be several weeks before bacteria levels in the ocean around San Juan Creek will drop to levels that the state says are safe for swimming.
Officials posted signs warning of the water’s potential health hazards from 250 feet north to 3,000 feet south of San Juan Creek last weekend after samples taken off the coast of Doheny State Beach revealed high bacteria levels in violation of several state standards for water quality.
While swimming isn’t currently prohibited at Doheny, it is up to the lifeguards’ discretion whether or not beach-goers are allowed into the water, said Monica Mazur, spokeswoman for the health care agency.
