Golden West Wins Conference Title in Men’s Water Polo

Kevin Marsh and Logan Shaw each scored three goals as Golden West won the South Coast Conference men’s water polo title Wednesday with a 13-8 victory over Fullerton.

Chris Burress had seven saves for Golden West (24-1-1, 5-0), ranked No. 2 in the state. Second-place Fullerton (16-3-1, 4-1) is ranked 10th in the state.

In South Coast Conference women’s water polo:

Golden West 23, Fullerton 2--After losing its first game of the season Saturday, Golden West roared back with a rout of host Fullerton (6-17-2, 2-4).

Christiana Mariciunik, Kim Steele and Agnus Kanska each had three goals for Golden West (25-1-1, 6-0).

In the Orange Empire Conference women’s golf tournament:

Saddleback leads after first round--Karlie Ward shot a six-over-par 80 and teammate Olivia Slutzky had an 83 to lead Saddleback at Los Serranos Golf Course.

Orange Coast was in second, one stroke behind the Gauchos. Robin Shaft shot an 87 for Orange Coast. Hye Joon Jung of Fullerton finished third overall with an 85. Play continues Monday.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Fullerton 0--Ashley Ferris led Golden West (14-0, 7-0) with 13 kills and Marissa Cothran had 39 assists in a 15-5, 15-5, 15-7 victory.

Cypress 3, Irvine Valley 1--Cypress moved into a tie for second place and handed Irvine Valley only its second loss of the season.

Heather Story led Cypress (8-4, 5-2) with 24 kills and Erika Williams added 17 kills as Cypress came back from a one-game deficit to win 15-17, 15-6, 15-11, 15-5.

Shannon Llamas had 17 kills for Irvine Valley (10-2, 5-2).

Riverside 3, Saddleback 2--Jennifer Ogilby had 26 kills to lead visiting Riverside (7-4, 4-3), which came back to win 10-15, 13-15, 15-9, 16-14, 15-8.

Lauren Henderson had 20 digs for Saddleback (0-13, 0-7).

In South Coast Conference wrestling:

Golden West 43, East Los Angeles 8--The Rustlers were helped by six forfeits by East Los Angeles. Froilan Gonzalez’s 9-7 overtime victory over East Los Angeles’ Jimmy Solis at 133 pounds was the highlight for Golden West.

In Western State Conference wrestling:

Rio Hondo 26, Cypress 21--J.T. Morales’ decision over Aaron Cross in the last match was the determining factor in Rio Hondo’s victory.

The score was tied, 21-21, after Cypress’ Howard Janec pinned Shawn Canfield in 2 minutes 53 seconds in a 197-pound match, then Morales came back to beat Cross in the heavyweight match, 13-4. Rio Hondo is 1-6, 1-2. Cypress is 1-6, 0-2.
