Never mind Jimmy Choo shoes and Martin Katz diamonds, the accessory of the evening at the 51st annual Emmy Awards was the celebrity date.

For years, Michelle Pfeiffer has walked the TV awards show walk with hubby David E. Kelley (“The Practice,” “Ally McBeal” and more), but this time she had lots of company.

For the record:

Designer--A story in Monday’s Calendar section misidentified the designer of a tiara worn by Camryn Manheim at the Emmys. The tiara was designed by Frances Klein.

Brad Pitt was content to let girlfriend Jennifer Aniston of NBC’s “Friends” take the spotlight in a brown dress with beaded bodice by Randolph Duke. Backing up Benjamin Bratt (NBC’s “Law & Order”) was Julia Roberts in slinky black Ralph Lauren.

Jack Nicholson was in the Shrine Auditorium audience Sunday, presumably to cheer on Lara Flynn Boyle of ABC’s “The Practice,” rumored to be his current main squeeze. Boyle wore a sheer--very sheer--lavender gown by Los Angeles designer David Cardona.

Although many hit the red carpet in the glam see-through sequin gowns that have become an awards show staple in recent years, the evening’s fashion standouts opted for dresses in colors that “popped” along with detailed embroidery, shiny beads and stones.

Setting the tone was Sarah Michelle Gellar of the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” who looked killer in a clingy turquoise dress by Vera Wang, with her wrists wrapped in strands of turquoise beads.

Other bright lights included Lucy Liu (of Fox’s “Ally McBeal”), who helped local costume designer Joseph Porro create her gown--featuring a plunging asymmetrical neckline in an Asian print. Wendie Malick of “Just Shoot Me” on NBC looked pretty in pink with Indian-inspired embroidery by Shelli Segal and Buddhist prayer-bead bracelets by Monica Nagy.

Halle Berry’s two-piece by Versace was afire, the top encrusted with branches of orange coral.

And proving there is life for the red dress after Minnie Driver, Christina Applegate of NBC’s “Jesse” looked ravishing in Richard Tyler, with red rhinestone shoes, bag and nails to match. “I chose it because it’s not something I would normally wear,” she said.

In contrast, Gloria Reuben of NBC’s “ER” chose a simple polka-dot dress by Melinda Eng. Plus-sized poster girl Camryn Manheim of “The Practice” wore an Emmanuel strapless dress with a deep neckline and Martin Katz tiara. Her shoes, $9.99, were Payless.

The two biggest disappointments of the evening had to be Sarah Jessica Parker of HBO’s “Sex and the City” in a dull yellow gown by Anna Molinari and “Ally’s” Calista Flockhart in a poufy Ralph Lauren yellow ball skirt and white shirt that looked three sizes too big. Some observers wondered if she chose the modest outfit as payback to critics who described her as looking anorexic at last year’s Emmy show.
