Newport Harbor girls’ volleyball Coach Dan Glenn has heard it all before.

Last season, outside hitter April Ross earned Times Player of the Year honors and helped Newport Harbor win the state Division I and Southern Section Division I-AA championships.

And with Ross back for her senior season, there are plenty of great expectations:

* Can the Sailors win back-to-back titles?

* Can Ross have another player of the year season?

* Is Ross the best Orange County volleyball player ever?

Just five years ago, Glenn heard that same label applied to his star player, Misty May, who helped Newport Harbor win state and section titles in 1994.

May is a two-time college player of the year and helped Long Beach State win the national title last season.

“April’s personality is similar to Misty’s,” Glenn said.

Two other similarities: versatility and a desire to win.

May was an All-American setter at Long Beach State, but she also played outside hitter at Newport Harbor. Ross began her high school career as a middle blocker, played outside hitter last season and is practicing at setter this season.

“I’m looking forward to that,” Ross said. “I just hope I get a chance to set in some matches.”

Ross’ versatility isn’t restricted to volleyball.

A two-time All-Sea View League selection in basketball and volleyball, Ross also advanced to the track and field state finals in the high jump as a freshman.

That athleticism wasn’t missed by college coaches. Ross has committed to play volleyball at USC.

“Without a doubt,” Glenn said, “at any school in the nation, April could set, play middle or outside hitter. She’s that athletic.”
