Bonds Praises Cassel, Hopes to Sack Him

Coach Jim Bonds of Alemany is full of praise for quarterback Matt Cassel of Chatsworth, who he will oppose tonight.

“I was very impressed,” Bonds said after watching Cassel pass for 322 yards against Reseda last week. “He was more mobile than I thought.”

But Bonds, who was a quarterback at UCLA, offered this observation about Cassel’s college choice, USC.

“I don’t have a grudge against USC,” Bonds said. “They’ll learn after four years they made a mistake.”

Of course, Bonds was just kidding, although the City vs. Southern Section meeting tonight between Chatsworth and host Alemany is bringing together old rivalries.

The Barnum family plans to attend the game. Brothers Eric and Usher Barnum were running backs for Chatsworth in the 1980s. Youngest brother, Terry, was a top running back for Alemany in 1991.

Usher can’t attend the game because he’s a lieutenant commander stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, but Eric, Terry and their parents will be there.

“The game the Barnum family has waited for is finally here,” Terry said.

Eric is picking Chatsworth, Terry is going with Alemany. What a surprise.
