A man holding a baby at knifepoint was shot and critically wounded Saturday evening by a Bell Gardens police officer, authorities said.

Bell Gardens police responded to a call about a domestic disturbance in the 6500 block of Scott Avenue and found the man threatening the baby with the knife, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Thomas.

“Fearing for the baby’s life, an officer fired one round, striking the suspect once in the upper body,” Thomas said.

The man, who authorities said has not been identified, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was in extremely critical condition. It was not known if the baby was his or if he lived at the home, Thomas said.

The shooting occurred at 7:40 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies, who investigate officer-involved shootings in Bell Gardens and other small police agencies within the county, were notified at 8:30 p.m., Thomas said. They will investigate and turn their findings over to Bell Gardens authorities.

Dolores Torres, a Bell Gardens police dispatcher, said the department could not provide any details about the shooting.
