Romanello’s Block Saves Pierce Victory Over Desert, 34-33

Jason Romanello blocked an extra-point attempt by Joe Marini with 35 seconds to play and Pierce College held on for a 34-33 victory over Desert in a nonconference game Saturday night at Pierce.

It was the first victory for Pierce Coach David Banuelos, whose team snapped a seven-game losing streak.

It also was the first home victory in five seasons for the Brahmas, who had lost 47 of their previous 51 games.

Scott Doherty, starting his first game for the Brahmas, completed 22 of 24 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns.

Three of the touchdowns went to wide receiver Aaron Lewis, who finished with six receptions for 57 yards.

Damon Coleman had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. The Brahmas (1-1) outgained the Roadrunners, 470 yards to 446.

Desert (0-2), which has lost 18 of its last 22, was led by Josh Salas with 192 yards and two touchdowns in 23 carries.

Former Reseda High standout Joseph Looney had 88 yards in 18 carries. Peter Gunney, who played at Granada Hills, had five catches for 88 yards.
