Sea Kings Run Away With Title

The top-ranked Corona del Mar girls’ cross-country team won the team title at the Sunny Hills Invitational by more than three minutes Saturday.

Eight girls finished in less than 20 minutes for the Sea Kings, led by senior Liz Morse, who ran 18:51 and broke the course record by two seconds. Third-ranked Esperanza finished fourth.

Also at the Sunny Hills Invitational:

Valencia boys take fourth--Senior Rafael Valdez ran 16:40 to take seventh in the senior division and help the Tigers to a fourth-place finish. The Tigers’ Juan Robles won the freshman race in 16:25 and teammate Humberto Castillo won the sophomore race in 16:50. Esperanza won the Division I competition, Lakewood was second and Bellflower St. John Bosco was third.

At the Golden Gate Invitational:

Escobar, Eckstaedt win--Villa Park’s Augie Escobar finished first in the boys’ varsity race, covering the 2.85-mile course in 14:36 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The Spartans finished second with 112 points. Yucaipa was first with 104.

In the girls’ varsity race, El Modena’s Christine Eckstaedt finished first in 17:27. Yucaipa won the team title, followed by Stockton Lincoln and El Modena.
