Strother Wins Surfing Competition

Chris Strother of Carlsbad won the Rusty Pro-Am surfing competition Sunday at 54th Street in Newport Beach.

Strother edged out San Clemente’s Dino Andino for the $2,500 first prize. Andino won $1,000.

Melanie Redman of Australia won the women’s competition and $2,000.

TENNIS

Kimberly Schram of Laguna Niguel defeated Tracy Thompson of San Diego, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, to win the women’s 40 singles division title at the Pacific Southwest Senior Tennis Championships on Sunday at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach.

Judy Louie of Corona del Mar won the women’s 45 singles title, defeating Kandy Chain of Los Angeles, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.

GYMNASTICS

Jeanette Antolin, a senior at Marina High, has earned a spot on the U.S. World Championships gymnastics team.

Antolin, who trains at SCATS Gymnastics in Huntington Beach, finished second in the all-around at the World Team Trials in Kansas City, Mo., with a 75.492 score.

SOCCER

UC Irvine’s soccer programs will host a four-part series for AYSO players to warm up with the Anteater teams on Saturdays. Boys and girls, ages 5-13, will work with Irvine players from 8 to 8:35 a.m. on Oct. 2 and Oct. 16 at the Irvine soccer complex.

The program costs $25 and includes a season pass to Anteater men’s and women’s games. For more information, call (949) 824-4690.

COACHES

The United States Olympic Committee announced that Ignatius Rusili of Orange and Li Hongping of Aliso Viejo have been chosen developmental coaches of the year.

Rusili, who was honored for badminton, and Hongping, for diving, are eligible for overall USOC national and developmental coach of the year awards.
