Pacifica Dominates 4th Quarter, Beats Kennedy
Jared Kemp scored four touchdowns and gained 97 yards in 26 carries, and Pacifica used a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Kennedy, 27-7, in a nonleague game Thursday at Western High.
In what was expected to be an offensive shootout, the teams played to a 7-7 tie through three quarters before the Mariners (2-1) scored two quick touchdowns in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.
“We made the mental adjustments we needed to to win,” said Kemp, who gained 72 of his rushing yards in the second half. “The offensive line really came out and made the difference in the second half.”
The teams combined for 12 punts, and neither side put together a substantial drive until Pacifica scored on a 12-play, 80-yard march capped by Kemp’s four-yard run with 11:31 to play.
On the ensuing kickoff, Kennedy’s Steve Yaden attempted a lateral that landed in the arms of Pacifica’s Sean Blankenship, giving the Mariners the ball on the Fighting Irish 25-yard line. Two plays later, Kemp scored on another four-yard run.
Kennedy’s lone score came in the second quarter, when Yaden connected with Jaiya Howze on a 36-yard halfback option pass.
Geoff Etherson threw for 150 yards on 16-of-36 passing, with one interception, for Kennedy (2-1).
