Reopening of Road Still 2 Years Away

Share

Balcom Canyon Road, which was washed away by El Nino storms in 1998, may reopen in two years, according to Butch Britt, county director of public works.

The county Board of Supervisors will vote on a design consultant Oct. 5. The design phase should take up to nine months and bidding for a contractor and constructing the half-mile roadway should take another nine months.

The total cost should be about $3 million, most of which will come from the Federal Highway Administration, Britt said.

“This road is the only other access [besides Grimes Canyon Road] between Santa Paula and Moorpark,” Britt said. “There are only two roads, and if Grimes Canyon has a landslide or washout, it would be good to have another road.”

The two-mile segment between Bradley and South Mountain roads is now closed.
