Police Say Underwood’s Wound Was Self-Inflicted

The saga of Dimitrius Underwood took another bizarre turn Monday when police said he had slashed himself in the neck with a knife.

Police found the 22-year-old defensive end covered with blood on a downtown Lansing, Mich., street Sunday after getting calls that a man was yelling for help.

“He was somewhat despondent,” police spokesman Lt. Ray Hall said.

A first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Underwood left after one day of training camp, questioning if he wanted to play football. After being released by the Vikings, he changed his mind about playing and signed with the Miami Dolphins--for considerably less money than he had with Minnesota.

Underwood apparently cut his neck at the home of the mother of his twin 17-month-old children, Hall said. No one in the home saw him cut himself, but several people in the neighborhood saw him running down the street.

Police took Underwood to an area hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Monday after undergoing surgery Sunday.

For the third time in his five NFL seasons, Ki-Jana Carter may have suffered a season-ending injury.

Bengals trainer Paul Sparling said it appears Carter, who dislocated his right kneecap Sunday at Carolina, will need surgery.

The Seattle Seahawks took their $35-million contract offer to Joey Galloway off the table and told the holdout wide receiver he must play under terms of his existing deal if he wants to play at all. . . . Denver Bronco linebacker John Mobley is scheduled to have surgery today to repair a torn knee ligament that ended his season 10 days ago.
