A motorist was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after his van swerved into the bike lane on Magnolia Street and fatally struck a female bicyclist, Huntington Beach police said Sunday.

Thomas Bowers, 61, of Costa Mesa was taken into custody by police after the 9 a.m. Sunday accident that occurred just north of the intersection of Magnolia Street and Atlanta Avenue, Police Lt. Clyde Stuart said.

The name of the bicyclist was not released because relatives had not yet been notified.

Stuart said the woman died instantly because of head injuries. It was not immediately known whether the bicyclist wore a helmet.

Police believe that Bowers was under the influence of some substance, but not necessarily alcohol.
