Authorities were searching Wednesday for the man who shot a 2-year-old girl on the Pomona Freeway in a case of apparent road rage.

Police said the gunman opened fire after a 19-year-old woman, who was driving a white Ford Mustang convertible on the freeway in Montebello, cut off a brown ‘80s-model four-door Oldsmobile.

The woman, whose name was not released, was traveling with her daughter and a 7-year-old boy Tuesday. The driver of the brown car, believed to have been accompanied by three other men, followed the Mustang for a short distance, then pulled alongside the woman’s car, said sheriff’s Deputy David Cervantes.

About 1:30 p.m., Cervantes said, the Mustang’s driver said she heard a pop and saw a cloud of dust coming from the rear seat area of the Mustang, where her daughter was. The girl suffered gunshot wounds to her left foot. The woman and the boy were not hurt.

Officers are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the sheriff’s East Los Angeles Station at (323) 264-4151.
