Two Leisure World residents were recently honored for their years of social work.

Helen Mills-Lindsay, 89, and Jane Slavin, 90, were the focus of a reception for National Social Workers Month. The two women are inspirations to their colleagues, said Gemma Heffernan, licensed clinical social worker and manager of Laguna Woods Social Services Department.

Mills-Lindsay began in the field of social work during the Depression. Her first job title was “welfare worker.”

Slavin worked as an attorney, as a teacher and in business, but once she tried the field of social work, she was hooked.

Even though she’s been retired for more than 25 years, Slavin still gets phone calls from old clients reminding her how she changed their lives.
