Red Line

I was glad to read that Mayor [Richard] Riordan finally got to ride the Red Line (“Riordan Calls Subway Station Key to Revival of Hollywood Area,” March 22) and found out that it is a great system. However, the Red Line’s terminating point in North Hollywood is in the remotest and most congested corner of the San Fernando Valley. During rush hour it can take half an hour to drive there from Van Nuys. What is needed, to make the Red Line more accessible to more people in the Valley is a bare-bones extension of five miles to Van Nuys and Oxnard boulevards. No intermediate stations are needed. Buses from all over the Valley can get to this location in about half an hour.

The politicians who passed a law that prohibited any more extensions to the Red Line have committed a grievous injustice against the taxpayers. This law should be repealed.

As far as proposing a rapid-transit system for the Valley, a monorail system from Chatsworth following the Victory / Oxnard railroad right-of-way through Warner Center and terminating at the new Red Line Terminal proposed above would be the most effective and cheapest solution for the Valley east-west corridor.
