Winter All-Sports Leaders

Share

The winter sports season has concluded and the points have been totaled toward the seventh annual Times’ Orange County all-sports award, given at the end of the school year to the large- and small-school division winners.

Newport Harbor, which held a commanding lead among large schools at the end of the fall season, fell to third place behind Mater Dei and Esperanza. Corona del Mar, which was well ahead of the small-schools pack, dropped to second behind Santa Margarita.

The All-Sports Award rewards schools that have the county’s most successful overall athletic programs. The Times’ scoring format awards points only for a team’s playoff participation and finish. Thus, field hockey programs can’t earn points because they do not have section-sanctioned playoffs.

Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs. In cross-country and golf, 20 points are awarded for a first-place finish, 16 for second, 12 for third and fourth, eight for fifth through eighth and four for qualifying.

The cutoff point to determine large-schools and small-schools categories was 2,000 students. Enrollment figures are those published in the Southern Section’s 1999-2000 Directory of Member Schools.
