It’s an Error to Compare Fighters of These Eras

Share

Seeing my cousin’s name, Joey Maxim [“Fighters of the Decade,” April 8] was a pleasant surprise, although the entire piece really diminishes the achievements of a quality 175-pounder, Roy Jones Jr.

It is extremely unfair to compare Jones to the light-heavies of the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, who all fought heavyweights, and who were all true warriors--most having careers of more than 100 fights.

Jones is the best light-heavyweight to come around since Bob Foster, but yardsticking him against the best of the best, i.e. Archie Moore and Joey Maxim, is not fair to the first man to draw attention to the weight class in recent memory.
