Greene Out of Mt. SAC, Boldon in Relay Only

The Mt. SAC Relays, longtime bastion of last-minute athlete scratches and nonstop organizational scrambling, received the bad news early this year:

Maurice Greene and Ato Boldon, the biggest names in the men’s invitational portion of the meet, have pulled out of their individual sprint races, their coach citing fitness concerns.

“It’s not time,” John Smith said Friday.

Greene, the 100-meter world-record holder, had been entered in the men’s 200 meters Sunday, and Boldon, the 1997 men’s 200-meter world champion, had been entered in the 100. Smith said Boldon instead would run a leg for the HSI track club’s 400-meter relay team. Greene will not run at all.

Meet promoters received a piece of positive news when Smith and HSI confirmed that 1999 women’s 200-meter world champion Inger Miller would run in Sunday’s 400 against Marion Jones. “Inger versus Marion--it’ll be fun,” Smith said. “They will compete against each other, but in a non-ego event.”

Neither runner specializes in the 400.
