* Re “U.S. Still Assuming Air Use for El Toro Base,” April 6:

The people of Orange County should take immediate action to wrest control of county government from the Orange County supervisors, who are ignoring the will of the people.

The voters have resoundingly spoken, and they should no longer stand for lack of representation. Your article says that the federal government is not paying attention to the results of Measure F. They are only recognizing the authority of the board.

We must stop the “train” now. Let’s band together and start the recall process right now to get rid of those supervisors who do not represent us before it is too late.

This nation was founded on the principle of a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Let’s get representation that truly represents all of us, not just the privileged few.

* Tustin made headlines March 26 because the Navy questioned the reuse plans for the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station.

The city’s land-use plan for Alternative 1 is 27% residential, 30% for public benefit and 43% for commercial and business development.

The Navy indicated that if the city expects to receive 100% of the land for free, the city is required to show that any housing built is necessary to create jobs.

City officials claim Tustin qualifies under federal law if all the money received from land sales is spent on infrastructure which will improve all the land sites envisioned in the base reuse plan.

My solution is to ask the city to decrease the planned development density at the base, let the city use some of the money from land sales for infrastructure, and return the rest to the taxpayers.

Zoning less density will reduce the giveaway dollars because the value of the land will be reduced, and lower density will produce less traffic with better air quality.

The current reuse plan alternatives will expose all of Orange County to significant and severe air pollution conditions, even after implementation of control measures.

* If the federal government decided El Toro international airport was necessary, could they refuse to turn the property over to the county and call for bids for the leasing, building and operation of the airport?

Hey, that’s private enterprise, and the South County anti-airport strategists wouldn’t have to fight the county government any more over the issue. JOHN GARDINER
