San Jose Turns Back Lancaster

Julio Ayala gave up five hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings and Lancaster allowed three seventh-inning runs in losing to the San Jose Giants, 5-3, in a California League game Tuesday night at Lancaster.

Bo Robinson had two hits, drove in a run and scored once for the JetHawks (9-3), who scored three runs in the second inning.

John Summers had three hits and drove in two runs for San Jose (6-6).

Middle infielder Vaughn Schill, 22, has left the JetHawks under voluntary retirement. The 6-2, 200-pound right-hander from Audubon, N.J., was batting .250 in 11 games. He had no extra base hits or runs batted in.

Schill will be replaced by Robert Gandolfo, a middle infielder who will be assigned to the JetHawks from extended spring training in Peoria, Ariz.

The JetHawks went into their game Tuesday night as the Cal League leader in batting with a .274 average and pitching with a 2.56 earned-run average.

Lancaster has four league leaders: right-hander Jeff Heaverlo (3-0) is the only three-game winner; right-hander Brandon Parker (0-0) has four saves, two more than any other reliever; outfielder Juan Silvestre has four home runs (tied for lead) and 17 runs batted in.

Outfielder Harvey Hargrove, Lancaster’s leading batter, is tied for fifth in the league at .375. Silvestre is in the top 10 at .350.
