San Bernardino’s Hong-Chih Kuo, a highly regarded Dodger prospect, underwent season-ending surgery Thursday. The 18-year-old Taiwanese left-hander had ligament transplant surgery to repair a ruptured medial collateral ligament in his left elbow. The injury occurred on the next-to-last of his prescribed 50 pitches in his debut April 10 against Visalia. On the 50th pitch, he struck out Michael Wenner to end the third inning of no-hit, no-run ball. Jerry Weinstein, director of player development for the Dodgers, said, “We’re all obviously disappointed, but on the bright side, this is a pretty commonplace surgery that has been completed hundreds of times. We expect that he will come back as strong, if not stronger than ever.”
