Western Wins With Grand Rally

Blake Harnden pitched a two-hitter and Rick Devinney hit a grand slam in a seven-run seventh inning as Western rallied to defeat Lakewood, 8-2, in the first round of pool play in the Anaheim Lions tournament at Glover Stadium Saturday.

Harden struck out eight and gave up two unearned runs, but the Pioneers trailed, 2-1, after six innings.

Western loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, tied the score on Andre Granda’s infield hit and went ahead, 3-2, on an infield single by Kyle Stanley. Devinney then homered and Chris Jackson followed with a bases-empty home run.

Western (10-8) has won its last six games.

In other pool-play games:

Cypress 12, Long Beach Wilson 2 (5, mercy)--J.J. Lovejoy hit his third homer of the season to lead off Cypress’ five-run third inning. The key blow was a bases-loaded triple by Paul Kerr. In the sixth, Cypress again loaded the bases and got four consecutive hits to drive in six more runs. Pitcher Chad Halbert (2-1) had two hits and two RBIs.

Katella 6, Servite 3--Starting pitcher Phil Tyson struck out 10 and gave up four hits for Katella (10-9) in the first round. David Alcantar drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the third and had a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Kennedy 6, Menifee Paloma Valley 3--Andy Miller had two hits and an RBI for Kennedy (12-6-1). Brad Roberts pitched 2 2/3 innings and retired eight of nine batters, giving up one run and one hit.

Loara 15, Savanna 1 (5, mercy)--David Ortiz had two run-scoring singles during a 10-run first inning for the Saxons (10-7-1).

Ortiz had three hits and drove in three runs, and Brian Kungl drove in three runs and pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight. Tony Box homered for Savanna’s run.

Murrieta Valley 7, Orange Lutheran 5--Galen Davis and Ryan Cecil each had two hits for Orange Lutheran (5-13).

Valencia 7, Reno (Nev.) 6 (8)--Matt Castillo’s single scored Hector Embriz in the bottom of the eighth to give Valencia the victory. Embriz, who led off the eighth with a double, finished with three hits, including two doubles, and had two RBIs.

In nonleague baseball:

Estancia 11-7, Rancho Alamitos 9-6--Estancia overcame an 8-0 deficit to win the first game. Brent Davis’ bases-loaded double in the third inning helped start the Eagles’ rally and Jordan Hart, in his first start of the season, pitched a complete game to earn the victory.

Frank De La Rosa had three hits, including a double and home run, for Rancho Alamitos, which had 13 hits. In the second game, Justin Lund scored on a bases-loaded walk as Estancia (8-9) won in eight innings.

Armando Ortiz (4-4) went the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the victory for the Eagles, who scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. Rancho Alamitos’ Brad French, who also homered in the first game, hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to give the Vaqueros a 6-4 lead.
