A new survey devoted to photographer William Wegman demonstrates the artist to be more than a cottage industry producing photographs and films of his pet Weimaraners. Spanning 30 years, the survey will trace the conceptual artist’s career from his early photographs, mid-career drawings, altered found photographs and his famous portraits of Weimaraners that have been immortalized in storybooks, photographs and television.

The California Speedway in Fontana kicks off its NASCAR racing season with numerous weekend events. The Auto Club 300 Busch Series Race at noon and the Pontiac Wide Track Grand Prix 200 Winston West Race at 3:30 p.m. will highlight Saturday’s events. A musical performance by the Marshall Tucker Band and a fireworks display will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. Practices, qualifying races and driver introductions will take place in the morning. Sunday’s main event will be the NAPA Auto Parts 500 Winston Cup Series Race at 11 a.m., featuring defending champion Jeff Gordon. Parade laps featuring Harley Davidson motorcycle riders, a canine disc exhibition and a skydiving show will precede the race beginning at 9 a.m.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Santa Monica College, a concert features Cloris Leachman narrating “Peter and the Wolf.” This program by the Santa Monica College Symphony and Concert Chorale, conducted by James E. Smith, also displays piano soloist Kirill Gliadkovsky, who plays Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. The concert also lists music by Prokofiev, David Goodman, Cliff Eidelman and Leonard Bernstein.
