FIRST QUARTER

Share

Lakers: 35

Sacramento: 24

Highlight Reel: Kobe Bryant stepped up with three highlight-reel plays in the quarter, but his three-point basket over Nick Anderson as he was falling away from well past the top of the key was his best.

It’s Not in the Box Score: Laker center Shaquille O’Neal had two assists in the quarter, with his alley-oop pass to Bryant bringing the crowd to life. From a full run, O’Neal lopped a pass from just outside the three-point line to Bryant, who finished the break with a right-hand slam dunk.

Winning Number: Eight offensive rebounds grabbed by the Lakers, who picked up where they left off in Game 1.

Wrong Number: Six field goal attempts missed by Sacramento’s leading scorer, Chris Webber, who shot two for eight in the quarter.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Bryant 15. Kings: Jason Williams 9.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: O’Neal 7. Kings: Vlade Divac 4.

Second quarter

Lakers: 56

Sacramento: 41

Highlight Reel: Bryant added another showcase play to his collection when he picked off a Jon Barry pass and finished with a scoop reverse layup around Predrag Stojakovic and Scot Pollard.

It’s Not in the Box Score: Sacramento made a run in the middle of the quarter by playing better defense on O’Neal. Divac was able to force O’Neal farther away from the basket, and that gave the Laker center some problems.

Winning Number: Seven, points Bryant scored in the quarter to give him 22 by halftime as the Lakers pulled away to a comfortable 15-point lead.

Wrong Number: Seven missed field goal attempts by Sacramento’s “Bench Mob” in the quarter. With their starters struggling, the Kings’ reserves did not add much.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Bryant 7. Kings: Webber 7.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: Robert Horry 6. Kings: Webber, Divac and Stojakovic 2.

THIRD QUARTER

Lakers: 83

Sacramento: 64

Highlight Reel: For the second time in the game, O’Neal took over as playmaker on a fastbreak with Bryant as the finisher. Bryant took in an open-court pass from O’Neal and embarrassed Jason Williams with a fake behind-the-back pass and layup.

It’s Not in the Box Score: The disappearing act of King starters Corliss Williamson and Nick Anderson, who did not do much on either end of the court as Bryant and Glen Rice dominated.

Winning Number: Nine. The Lakers are a much stronger team when Rice is involved more on offense, and he scored this total in the quarter, which matched his first-half total.

Wrong Number: Four. Any hopes the Kings had for a comeback ended with this amount of turnovers in the quarter, compared to the Lakers, who didn’t have any.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Rice 9. Kings: Webber 7.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: O’Neal and A.C. Green 4. Kings: Webber 7.

FOURTH QUARTER

Lakers: 113

Sacramento: 89

Highlight Reel: O’Neal made his final basket of the game a memorable one when he faked a pass and then shot a baseline fade-away jumper over the backboard and a frustrated Divac.

It’s Not in the Box Score: The body language of the Kings for the final 12 minutes was that of a defeated team. Not only did the Lakers win the first two games of the series, but they also may have taken away Sacramento’s confidence.

Winning Number: Four. O’Neal had a perfectly nice quarter. He had only four field-goal attempts and made them all.

Wrong Number: 61.9. Sacramento gave up this shooting percentage from the field in the quarter, with most of it in garbage time.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: O’Neal and Rick Fox 8. Kings: Webber, Pollard, Tyrone Corbin and Lawrence Funderburke 4.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: O’Neal and Brian Shaw 3. Kings: Pollard, Barry and Corbin 2.
