Amritraj Is Seeded Second in USTA Nationals

After a successful season on the International Tennis Federation circuit, Prakash Amritraj of Encino has been seeded No. 2 in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 Super National Hardcourt Championships.

The tournament, which begins today and runs through Aug. 13 in Kalamazoo, Mich., has 256 players.

Amritraj, a senior at Harvard-Westlake High, is seeded behind Rajeev Ram of Carmel. Doug Stewart of Malibu is seeded third.

Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks is seeded 14th and Calabasas resident Stephen Amritraj, Prakash’s cousin, is 18th.

Entries include Jesse Ferlianto of Canyon Country, David Keyes of Sherman Oaks, Andrew Lieu of Thousand Oaks, Adrian Mardyks and Jason Mossembekker of Camarillo, Justin Montgomery of Oxnard, Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth and Robert Yim of Glendale.

* Top players from the region in the 18s tournament, which is considered the U.S. junior national championship, are No. 12-seeded Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo and No. 14 Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks.

Quinn Borchard of Camarillo, David Frankel, who graduated from Harvard-Westlake High; Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills, and Amir Mirandy of Woodland Hills are also entered.

* Brooke Borisoff of Agoura Hills is the No. 10-seeded player in the USTA Girls 16 Super National Hardcourt Championships scheduled to run Sunday through Aug. 13 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Lori Stern of Ojai is seeded 30th and Georgette Wright of Burbank is No. 31.

Others competing include Samantha Hammond and Nina Yaftali, both of Westlake Village; Sonya Reynolds of Palmdale and Monica Wiesener of Woodland Hills.

BASEBALL

* West Hills Chaminade begins play in the American Legion 17-and-under state tournament against Danville at 9 a.m. Saturday in Yountville.

Chaminade (27-2) qualified for the double-elimination tournament, which runs until Aug. 15, by taking second in the Southern California qualifier last week. Chaminade advanced with a 7-4 victory over Chino Hills last Friday, led by Cody Haerther’s four runs batted in.

Capistrano Valley, two-time defending state champion, placed first in the Southern California qualifier.

* Aaron Marcarelli, who coached Grace Brethren to consecutive championships in Southern Section Division VI, has been hired to coach at Loyola High.

Marcarelli, a former minor-league shortstop, led Grace Brethren to a 45-7 record in two years at the small school in Simi Valley.

SOCCER

* John Macdonald, formerly of Alemany High and California, signed a professional contract with St. Mirren of the Scottish Premier League.

TENNIS

* Vik Chatterjee has been hired as coach at Crespi High.
