About 50 residents showed up to question officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station at a meeting last week at the San Clemente Community Center.

Of top concern was maintaining public safety in the decommissioning of the Unit I reactor.

NRC officials, who had scheduled the meeting to unveil their new plant inspection program, fielded numerous questions about the NRC, the lack of public notice for the meeting and San Onofre’s efforts to safely decommission the Unit I reactor, one of three at the power plant.

The Unit I reactor began operation in 1968 and has been mothballed since 1992. It is about a year into an eight-year decommissioning process, which involves removal of the contaminated reactor and removal and storage of spent nuclear fuel.
