Pilot Lands Experimental Aircraft on Freeway After Engine Fails

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The pilot of a single-engine, experimental aircraft made an emergency landing on the shoulder of Interstate 5 on Monday after the plane’s engine failed.
Kirk Murphy, 21, of Carlsbad was flying a one-seat Glass Air-model plane at 2,000 feet when the aircraft’s engine quit, California Highway Patrol Officer Phil Konstantin said.
Murphy followed proper procedure but couldn’t restore power to the plane.
He flew in from the coast and noticed that traffic on the southbound lanes of the freeway was light and he landed on the freeway.
The pilot of five years landed on the right shoulder of the freeway without incident about 4:30 p.m., Konstantin said.
No one was injured.
