NEWPORT BEACH
Rupert, the Newport Beach black swan who was nearly killed when he swam through diesel fuel last week, was returned to the wild Monday after recuperating.
A favorite of many locals, Rupert was treated at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach after his travail Aug. 8. The swan was nearly dead when he was rescued by officers of the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol.
However, care center workers said Rupert made a speedy recovery after being cleaned and fed a liquid charcoal solution to soak up the oil he had ingested. Officials said the fuel he swam through probably came from a small leak and was not large enough to warrant an investigation.
