From Staff Reports

Mervyn Penniston of Trinidad and Jaime De La Torre of Zacatecas, Mexico, will fight for the WBC Latin American-Caribbean super-middleweight championship on Sept. 16 at the Castaic Brick Yard.

Penniston and De La Torre, who trains out of El Monte, each have seven knockouts.

Two experienced lightweights, Justin Juuko of Masaka, Uganda, and Alejandro Jiminez of Canoga Park, will meet in an eight-round bout.

“I’ve definitely stepped up to a bigger plate,” said promoter Ron Williams of RW Productions, who held three fight nights at the Valencia Hyatt earlier this year. “The other fights had B class and C+ class fighters. These guys are B+ class fighters.”

Williams said it was not difficult to land the title fight between Penniston and De La Torre.

“For some reason, when you talk Southern California, [boxers] like coming here,” Williams said. “It’s not a hard sell at all.”

The Penniston-De La Torre fight is the second title fight this year in the Santa Clarita Valley. Rodger Medal of Pasadena defeated Israel Correa of Oxnard with a 12th-round knockout to win a WBC FECAR junior-lightweight title match.

While Williams expects Penniston and De La Torre to put on a good show, he believes the Juuko-Jiminez fight and three others involving newcomers to the professional ranks will be entertaining.

“Juuko and Jiminez are a good match,” Williams said. “Juuko has lost title fights to Diego Corrales and Floyd Mayweather. Jiminez is what you’d call a journeyman, but he’s the type of fighter who will give Juuko a tough time.”

Also fighting at Castaic Brick Yard will be junior-lightweight Alicia Doyle, a Calabasas woman making her debut against Lisa Valencia of Pomona, and Artyon Galstyan of Glendale, a junior-welterweight in his second pro bout.
