Light-Rail Plans Still on Track

City Councilman Don Bankhead said Thursday that he hopes to continue pushing along plans for a light-rail system that would connect Fullerton to other cities in the county.

Bankhead and Councilwoman Jan M. Flory were appointed recently to serve on the Orange County Transportation Authority’s CenterLine Corridor Advisory Panel, a group of 15 representatives that will provide input on station locations, track alignment, public participation and aesthetics of the light-rail project, which would extend from Fullerton to Irvine.

Bankhead has been involved in the rail project for 12 years, he said. “It all started when a few of us got together and started to talk about the idea,” he added. Since then, OCTA has taken charge of the project, which is still in its early planning stages.

Bankhead said it has not yet been decided whether the rail system will be elevated or operated at street level, but he expressed firm views on how the project would work in his hometown.

“I don’t know what they’ll do in other cities,” he said, “But we will insist on an elevated rail coming into Fullerton.”
