Gore Makes Move With 63 at La Quinta

Jason Gore of Valencia shot nine-under-par 63 on Friday to move into a tie for seventh place after three rounds of the PGA Tour Qualifying School at PGA West in La Quinta.

Gore, a graduate of Pepperdine, had four birdies and an eagle while shooting 30 on the front nine of the Jack Nicklaus Private course.

The 1997 California Amateur champion, Gore is at 69-69-63--201, six strokes behind leader Andrew McLardy of South Africa.

Jeff Sanday of South Pasadena, a graduate of Cal State Northridge, is tied for 11th at 68-72-65--205, despite making a quintuple-bogey nine during the second round.

Chad Wright of Ventura, the Canadian PGA champion, is tied for 99th at 69-72-73--214.

The top 35 players and ties after six rounds earn PGA Tour cards for next year, with the next 50 earning exempt status on the Buy.com Tour.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

* Top-seeded Susanna Lingman of Irvine Woodbridge defeated No. 4-seeded Lori Stern of Cate, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Southern Section singles championships on Friday at The Claremont Club.

* Third-seeded Jasmin Dao of Granada Hills defeated University’s Flavia Buica, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 8-seeded Diana Friedland of Van Nuys defeated Eagle Rock’s Hanna Atacador, 6-3, 6-0, in the City Section round of 32 at Balboa Recreation Center in Encino.

Two otherGranada Hills players, Yuka Otaka and Canna Furuta, advanced. Otaka defeated Cindy Gomez of Belmont, 6-4, 6-0, and Furuta defeated Eunice Cho of Verdugo Hills, 6-0, 6-1.

Grant’s Shayna Fox defeated Sandy Soltero of Huntington Park, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, defending City champions and top-seeded Caryn Linder and Shannon Slotnick of Granada Hills defeated Yarytza Garcia and Guadalupe Meza of Huntington Park, 6-1, 6-2, and will play the Verdugo Hills team of cousins Polly and Leesa Mac, who defeated Marshall’s Vickie Morell and Lilly Koushian, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Third-seeded Andrea Blieden and Tracey Takeshita of Granada Hills beat Verdugo Hills’ Susan Mac and Linda Pham, 6-0, 6-2.

San Fernando’s Karina Rojas and Valerie Mendoza defeated Mireya Flores and Marlene Castellanos of Bell, 6-2, 6-1, and Chatsworth’s Heather Williams and Tianna Von Mulldorfer defeated Franklin’s Elaine Ly and Nga Cao , 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

FOOTBALL

* Nick Kaiser of Nordhoff High, who rushed for 1,805 yards and 20 touchdowns, was selected the Frontier League’s most valuable offensive player.

Calabasas linebacker David Wolfe was chosen defensive co-MVP with Dane Skophammer of Malibu.

VOLLEYBALL

* Outside hitter Kasey Jungwirth of Cal State Los Angeles, a senior from Camarillo High, was selected second-team Division II All-American.

Jungwirth, a four-time All-California College Athletic Assn. selection, finished second in career kills (1,507), digs (1,177) and aces (147) for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to finish 30-1, 22-0 in CCAA play.
