Wake Forest got a career-high 21 points from Josh Howard and Craig Dawson added 20 as the 11th-ranked Demon Deacons (7-0) defeated No. 3 Kansas, 84-53, at Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Jayhawks (7-1) played without leading scorer Kenny Gregory. Kansas was averaging 92.1 points, but couldn’t get its offense clicking without its senior leader. He is averaging 17.9 points, but didn’t play because of a stress fracture in his right foot.

No. 6 Tennessee 85, Southern Methodist 76--The Volunteers (8-0) overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to win at Knoxville, Tenn. The Mustangs (4-1) have lost 24 straight to ranked opponents since beating Houston in January 1993.

No. 23 Alabama 68, Wofford 64--Ian Chadwick scored 26 points, including 12 on free throws, to lead the Terriers at Tuscaloosa, Ala., but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Crimson Tide from improving to 5-0.

No. 1 Connecticut cruised to a 92-32 victory over Holy Cross at Storrs, Conn. No. 12 Louisiana Tech (7-2) extended its home winning streak to 30 games with an 83-65 victory over No. 14 Mississippi State at Ruston, La. . . . Jackie Stiles scored 39 points in No. 18 Southwest Missouri State’s 101-87 victory over Iowa at Springfield, Mo. . . . Zuzana Klimesova scored 21 points to lead No. 23 Vanderbilt past Western Kentucky, 89-58, at Nashville.
