So Much Can Happen Before a Bowl Game

Bill Shaikin’s blurb about Coach Bob Toledo’s faith that the UCLA administration will “do what’s right” regarding his perceived salary “disparity” hit yet another nerve. So many responses, so little room.

The cerebral: “Perhaps Mr. Toledo should enjoy salary parity with the tenured professors on campus.”

The grid-crazed: “When Toledo starts fielding a full team--including a decent defense, he can expect a full salary.”

The altruistic: “College football coaches making 10-20 times what an experienced teacher or police officer can hope to earn? Something’s wrong with this picture.”

The partisan adversary: “Hah, two in a row, please keep him around!”

The second-guesser: “See, if we’d gotten Neuheisel this wouldn’t have happened.”

Regarding Freddie Mitchell’s comments after learning he did not win the coveted Biletnikoff Award as college football’s top receiver. Two other awards he most certainly will not win are for maturity and class. I guess those sleepy “old dudes” who voted did not realize they have perhaps compromised Mitchell’s potential NFL signing bonus. What were they thinking? Where are their priorities? They may have inadvertently cost him a recording contract to boot.
