* Keith Smith, former Newbury Park High and Arizona quarterback, lost a legal battle that would have cleared the way for him to play for the Los Angeles Xtreme of the XFL.

Smith was drafted by the Xtreme in the 25th round with the 193rd overall selection. He passed for 5,972 yards at Arizona, third-highest in school history, and signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League last summer. Smith retired from the CFL before the season.

A U.S. district court in Phoenix ruled Friday that Smith was under contract to the Roughriders through 2003 and that the Xtreme did not have the rights to negotiate a contract with him. The CFL said the decision was crucial to keeping its players from jumping to the XFL, which said before its draft that it would honor CFL contracts.
