Long Beach State 69, UC Irvine 60--Ramel “Rock” Lloyd scored 10 of his 16 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes to allow the 49ers (15-3, 7-0 in the Big West) to hold off the Anteaters (8-10, 1-6) at Irvine and increase their winning streak to 13.
Lloyd, whose scoring average had dropped from 18 a game last season to 13 due in part to 41% shooting, made five of nine shots. After Irvine closed within 54-50 with 4:41 left, Lloyd scored on a layup that he converted into a three-point play after being fouled. Then, when the Anteaters again closed within four with 2:38 left, he made a three-point shot.
Ron Johnson had 18 points for Long Beach, while Jerry Green--after going scoreless the first eight minutes of the game--had 19 for Irvine. Green also had eight of the Anteaters’ 21 turnovers.
