A 38-year-old man died Friday afternoon after he was crushed by his own pickup truck in a bizarre accident at the Postal Service office at 7320 Reseda Blvd., authorities said.

A witness reported that the man had pulled his truck up alongside a drive-by mailbox, where he attempted to mail a letter or package, said Sgt. Michael Harrington of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

The man dropped the item, opened the door and leaned out to retrieve it but tumbled out of his seat, the witness told police. “He fell out of the truck and onto the ground,” Harrington said. “The truck was still in drive, and it rolled over him.”

Paramedics who arrived at the scene about 5:15 p.m. found the man “in very, very critical condition” with severe head and chest trauma, said Jim Wells, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The man, whose name authorities did not release, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
