The City Council on Tuesday approved a lease with a telecommunications company, despite hearing a request from a company representative to reduce the rent.

Last month the council approved Pacific Bell Wireless’ installation of a cellular facility and antennas on an electrical tower on Alicia Parkway adjacent to the Alicia Town Center. The final step to approve the project was the council’s blessing of a lease that would require the company to pay the city $1,250 a month for its use of public property.

But a Pacific Bell representative in the audience stopped the vote and asked for the rent to be reduced because the company must also pay rent to Edison for its use of the tower.

City Manager Bruce Channing urged the council to vote on the lease presented and let the phone company decide if it wanted use of the land.
