Senior wrestler Tony Aparicio, ranked first in the county and second in the state in his weight class, was expelled from Calvary Chapel High, Coach John Azevedo said Thursday.

Aparicio, who transferred from Loara to Calvary Chapel last year, was dismissed because of disciplinary problems, according to Azevedo.

Aparicio, who competes at 140 pounds, was expelled from school on Wednesday.

Aparicio was 35-2 this season and won titles at the Five Counties and Reno invitationals.

He competed at 135 pounds last season for Loara, won Empire League, Southern Section Division III and Masters titles and was third at the state meet.

“Yeah, it’s always tough to lose a wrestler,” Azevedo said, “Tony is devastated about this. The kids are bummed. But I’m probably more hurt than they are.

“The guys are still focused, and I think we still have a chance of winning state if we can stay error-free.”

Azevedo said the school is looking into helping Aparicio finish his senior year with home schooling.
