Not Everybody Loves CBS Golf

Share

Finally a column by J.A. Adande in which I’m 100% in agreement. His Feb. 7 column [“A Golf Tournament? Not Now, It’s a Joke”] said what most of us watching CBS coverage on Sunday were thinking.

I turned on Channel 2 expecting to see some professional golfers. Instead, I got a steady picture of 18-handicapper Ray Romano looking like a 30-handicapper! Could it be that CBS sponsors the Romano TV series? With Bill Murray absent, CBS must have decided that Tom Smothers and his yo-yo would provide enough comic relief.

Most of our Pasadena Senior Men’s Club could spot Romano 10 strokes and whip him. Even respected TV announcer Jim Nantz must have succumbed to producer pressure to say something good about Romano’s game. His comment, “Well, Romano hit it 50 yards out of the rough onto the fairway--not a bad shot.” What he should have said was, “What are these celebrity hackers doing here in the first place!”

It’s a wonder any pro shows up at Pebble Beach.

Between the “beauty shots,” the endless promotion of Ray Romano and the boring attention to amateur hackers, the “Everybody Loves Raymond/AT&T; 2000 Pro-Am” third round at Pebble Beach has to be the worst golf telecast in the history of broadcasting.

I’d like to point out an error in Tuesday’s paper. The column on the Pebble Beach Pro-Am said that Tiger’s winning streak is now at six, when it’s actually only five.

On Monday, J.A. Adande explained that the Pebble Beach tournament doesn’t really count because Tommy Smothers rolls his yo-yo across the greens. Or does that only bother Tiger, and not Vijay Singh or Notah Begay?

Nothing can diminish Woods’ accomplishments at Pebble Beach, but his final-round 64 was accomplished under lift, clean and place rules.

Golf is not roller derby. The hero is not expected to come up with a miracle to win every week. For the sanctity of the game and for the sanity of all duffers who choke week in and week out, Tiger must be stopped.

If Tiger Woods is so amazing, why was he seven strokes behind after 3 1/2 rounds?
