Titans Use 22 Hits to Bury Baylor

Cal State Fullerton used a 22-hit attack to defeat Baylor, 16-4, Saturday in front of 1,115 at Titan Field.

Third baseman Shawn Norris went four-for-four, including two doubles, and had three runs batted in and designated hitter Brett Kay had three hits and three RBIs for the Titans (2-3), who hit 12 doubles and two home runs.

Baylor is 3-2, with its two losses coming against Fullerton.

Chris Beck and Steve Woodward each had a home run, two doubles and three runs for Fullerton, which led, 10-0, after four innings. Beck also had two RBIs.

Aaron Rifkin hit two doubles and Jake Epstein had two RBIs for the Titans.

Fullerton’s Jon Smith (1-1), who gave up one hit through the first 4 2/3 innings, went five innings to earn the victory, giving up two hits and two earned runs with five walks and three strikeouts.

Fullerton relievers Sean Martin, George Carralejo and Mike Nunez combined to give up four hits and two runs over the final four innings.

Baylor starting pitcher Josh Scott gave up seven hits and seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. today at Titan Field.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Azusa Pacific 9, Concordia 6--Derek Patterson hit his third home run and Dan Miranda drove in two runs for the Eagles (4-7, 0-4).

Azusa Pacific is 6-1-1, 4-0.

Biola 8, Vanguard 1--Timothy Jara hit a home run in the third inning for Vanguard (0-5, 0-3).

At the Arizona State softball tournament:

CS Fullerton 8, Massachusetts 1--Yasmin Mossadeghi hit two doubles and winning pitcher Gina Oaks improved to 4-0 for Fullerton (9-0). UMass is ranked 16th in the nation. Fullerton is scheduled to play No. 13 Nebraska and No. 8 Arizona State today.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UCLA 6, UC Irvine 1--UC Irvine (5-2) won its only point in doubles, with Chris Ma and Chris Chung winning at No. 1, 8-5, and David Matthew and Oliver Schweizer winning at No. 2, 8-5.

In Big West Conference women’s gymnastics:

Cal State Fullerton 195.500, San Jose State 191.275--Joanna Hughes won the vault (9.875), and bars (9.900) and Megan Berry won the all-around (38.875) for host Fullerton, which set a school record for overall score.
