CSUN Opens Student Services Building

Cal State Northridge officially unveiled Monday its new Student Services Building, a “one-stop shopping” center for students trying to navigate around the university bureaucracy.

Students and others were given tours of the former Administration Building, which only recently reopened after being knocked out of commission by the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

“This building should provide for most students what we call ‘one-stop shopping,’ ” said Fred Strache, interim vice president of student affairs. “It should be a great timesaver for the average student.”

The five-story building now houses nearly all of CSUN’s student services, from financial aid and admissions, to advisement, disability resources and counseling, a university spokesperson said.

“After 1994, centralizing those services students use a lot became a priority,” said Carmen Ramos Chandler, director of news operations for the university. “Students could spend entire days going from one side of campus to another.”

Chandler said the new administration building should open around fall 2001. Currently, university officials are scattered throughout the campus, including interim President Louanne Kennedy, who has been working out of a trailer, Chandler said.
