Martin Brodeur wasn’t taking credit for his unlikely game-winning goal. In fact, he wasn’t even sure it belonged to him.

The New Jersey goalie scored his second career goal and stopped 19 shots Tuesday night in the Devils’ 4-2 victory over the Flyers at East Rutherford, N.J.

Brodeur was credited with a goal at 9:43 of the third period when Flyer goalie Brian Boucher vacated the net after a delayed-penalty call against Devil defenseman Scott Stevens.

As the Flyers tried to set up for a rush, Sergei Brylin of the Devils collided with Philadelphia’s Daymond Langkow, knocking the puck loose. It rolled into the empty net. Brodeur, the last Devil player to touch the puck, got credit for the goal.

“I was kind of surprised,” Brodeur said. “I was trying to get ready for the power play. The next thing you know they announce your name scoring the goal.”

Brodeur scored his first goal by actually shooting the puck the length of the ice on April 17, 1997 in a playoff game against Montreal.

Sergei Nemchinov, Patrik Elias and Scott Niedermayer also scored for the Devils, who extended their unbeaten streak to six at 5-0-1.

Edmonton 2, Nashville 1--Boyd Devereaux and Rem Murray scored first-period goals and Tommy Salo made 27 saves to lead the Oilers at Nashville.

The Oilers, who moved into first place in the Northwest Division--one point ahead of Colorado--extended their season-high unbeaten streak to six (4-0-2). Nashville dropped its fourth in a row.

San Jose 4, New York Islanders 1--Defenseman Brad Stuart scored twice to help lead the Sharks at Uniondale, N.Y. Mike Rathje and Tony Granato also scored for San Jose.

Washington 2, Colorado 1--Adam Oates and Chris Simon each had a goal and an assist in the second period as the Capitals won their franchise-record ninth in a row at home.

Oates’ assist on Simon’s goal gave him 873 for his 15-year career, tying him with Phil Esposito for 14th on the NHL’s career list. The two points moved Oates past Bobby Hull into 30th place with 1,171.

Washington is 14-2-2 in 18 games and unbeaten in 12 home games (10-0-2), one shy of the team record set in 1992-93.

St. Louis 4, Atlanta 1--Michal Handzus scored two short-handed goals at St. Louis as the Blues extended Atlanta’s winless streak to 11 games.

The first game between the franchises was a contrast of teams heading in opposite directions. Atlanta is 0-10-1 in its last 11, and 3-21-4 on the road. The Blues are 9-2-0 in their last 11 and lead the Western Conference with 78 points.
