An accident involving eight cars on the Costa Mesa Freeway in Santa Ana injured one person and tied up rush-hour traffic for an hour Wednesday night, authorities said.

Late Wednesday, investigators were still gathering details of the 6:50 p.m. incident, said Mark Reeves, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

“All we know is that it was a collision and a fire erupted after the collision,” he said.

The accident did not appear to be weather-related, he said.

One car was engulfed in flames, he said, and one person, whose identity was not released, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment of burns.

The accident, which happened on the southbound side of the freeway near 17th Street, closed all lanes but the carpool lane until about 8 p.m., Reeves said.
