HISTORY

* The first Los Angeles Open was staged in 1926 by the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce with the intention of promoting still-young Los Angeles throughout the country. An unheard of $10,000 purse was offered and the tournament caused a nationwide stir.

* The first Los Angeles Open held at Riviera Country Club was in 1929. Riviera was less than two years old. This event will mark the 38th time Riviera hosts the L.A. Open.

* The first woman to play in a PGA men’s event was Babe Didrikson Zaharias, at the 1938 Los Angeles Open.

* The Los Angeles Open defied the PGA ban on African American players by allowing Joe Louis to compete in the 1952 tournament. Louis became the first black to compete in a PGA event.

* In 1929, the Los Angeles Open provided the first radio broadcast of a golf tournament.

* In 1953, the Los Angeles Open became the first golf tournament televised locally and, in 1966, became the first televised nationally.
