Hebert Chalks It Up to Bad Breaks of Game

Goalie Guy Hebert met with Coach Craig Hartsburg before Thursday’s practice to discuss his poor performance in the Ducks’ 6-5 overtime victory Wednesday against the Calgary Flames.

“They were bad, unlucky bounces,” Hebert said of giving up five goals against the Flames. “No goalie can explain it when the hockey gods are against him.”

Hebert said he watched the replay of the third period plus overtime on television when he got home late Wednesday night.

“By all rights, we should have won, 5-2,” he said. “The guys kept plugging away for me. We got huge contributions from everybody, but especially from Paul [Kariya], Teemu [Selanne] and Steve [Rucchin] and by Oleg [Tverdovsky] in overtime.”

Tverdovsky’s game-winner 1:40 into overtime gave the Ducks their first victory when giving up five or more goals since they defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 7-5, on Dec. 20, 1993. The Ducks are 2-87-5 in their seven-season history when giving up five or more goals.

Hebert said he remains troubled by a neck problem caused when Keith Tkachuk of the Phoenix Coyotes ran into him Dec. 22. The pain subsided, but returned when he was bowled over in consecutive games earlier this month against the Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers and the Kings.

“I’m as good as I’m going to be,” he said. “I don’t see it getting any better without taking some time off. It’s no excuse. I’m getting my therapy.”
