Two people were killed in unrelated single-vehicle accidents over the weekend--one in the Sunland-Tujunga area and another near Antelope Valley’s Big Mountain Ridge--authorities said Sunday.

A 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco ran off Big Tujunga Boulevard near Mount Gleason Avenue about 11:10 p.m. Saturday, overturned a few times and rolled into the Tujunga Wash, said Los Angeles Police Officer Connie Silber.

The driver, Carmen Gernier, 49, of Tujunga, was pronounced dead at the scene, Silber said.

Gernier’s boyfriend, Barran Graham, 58, also of Tujunga, suffered cuts on his head and was taken to an area hospital, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation suggested that Gernier had been speeding, Silber said.

About 2 a.m. Sunday, a 1994 Ford pickup traveling south on the Antelope Valley Freeway near the Crown Valley Road exit drifted over to the right shoulder, said Officer Rosa Ray, a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol.

The driver over-corrected and lost control of the truck, which hit a berm, became airborne and landed on a hillside embankment before overturning in a gully, Ray said.

The driver, a 48-year-old man from Acton, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld, pending notification of relatives.

He was not wearing a seat belt, Ray said.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
