No. 10 Vanguard Rallies to Beat Azusa Pacific

The Vanguard women’s basketball team, ranked 10th in NAIA Division I, staged a second-half comeback and defeated No. 20 Azusa Pacific, 63-52, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday at Azusa Pacific.

Vanguard (12-2) missed 22 of its first 29 shots and fell behind by as many as 10 points during the first half. Vanguard found its shooting touch in the second half, making six of 13 three-pointers and outscoring Azusa Pacific, 43-26.

Kelly Boeke had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Vanguard, which has won six consecutive games.

Freshman Allison Box scored 16 points for the Cougars (9-3).

In another Golden State Athletic Conference women’s game:

Concordia 83, Point Loma Nazarene 68--Jaime Gast scored 20 of her 29 points in the first half, helping Concordia (11-2, 1-0) to a 48-33 halftime lead. Concordia’s Taryn Commins had 16 points and nine rebounds.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Point Loma Nazarene 59, Concordia 53--Concordia (8-4, 0-1) stayed within four points until the end, when Point Loma Nazarene (13-1, 1-0) scored on a breakaway, then clinched it with two free throws.

In a nonconference game:

Wheaton 70, Chapman 66--Matt Poutsma led the Panthers with 12 points and Tim Werdel added 10. Chapman (8-5) made only five of 20 from the three-point line. Wheaton, of Norton, Mass., is 5-2.
