Eric Chenowith had already heard the worst that Kansas fans could throw at him. This time, it was his turn to hear their cheers.

The junior center, booed after a four-point, three-rebound performance Thursday in an 11-point victory over Saint Louis, won his way back into the Jayhawk faithful’s hearts Tuesday night with 14 points and three blocked shots in a 105-59 victory over Pennsylvania at Lawrence, Kan.

“I was really embarrassed after that [Saint Louis] game. That hit at my pride,” Chenowith said. “I’ve talked before about how much I love this university, and it’s really disappointing when you give your heart and soul to something and people boo you.”

Coach Roy Williams brought Chenowith in earlier Tuesday to review tape from the Saint Louis game, in which Chenowith had two late rebounds taken away.

“I told him he needed to start playing well, because I was thinking about putting someone else in there,” Williams said. “I thought it was important to be straight with him. I told him I was sticking with him, but there comes a time when everyone has to produce.”

Freshman reserve Drew Gooden led Kansas with 20 points, making eight of 12 shots, and had nine rebounds. The Jayhawks had five double-figure scorers.

Kansas is 11-2, Penn 3-5.

Around the Nation

Nate Knight, backup center at Kentucky and younger brother of Laker reserve Travis Knight, has left the team, Coach Tubby Smith said. Kentucky signed Knight last spring from Utah Valley State College after the surprise transfer of starting center Michael Bradley. Knight, a 6-foot-9 junior, had little impact, playing 79 minutes season behind starter Jamaal Magloire and averaging 1.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in nine games. . . . Radford Coach Ron Bradley reinstated five players who had been suspended for returning late from Christmas break. Jamar Betz, Byron Hall, Lamar King, Camara Mitz and Jason Williams sat out games against Chattanooga, Tennessee State and Tennessee, all of which Radford lost. After Radford’s Dec. 18 game against Virginia Commonwealth, the players were given four days off and told to return to practice Dec. 23, Bradley said. The players did not return until Dec. 26.
